The first counts of Provence were:
In 855, Charles, king of Provence, the 3-rd son of Lothaire.
In 879, Boson, king of Burgundy and Provence, brother-in-law of Charles le Chauve.
Then, in 1125 , Provence was shared among the count of Barcelona, (county of Provence, in the South of Durance) and the count of Saint-Gille-Toulouse, (marquisate of Provence, in the North of Durance, until Valencia at least):
Saint-Gille-Toulouse's blazon is "gules in the cross cléchée or ".
From 1125 till 1246, the counts of Barcelona were counts of Provence (in the South of Durance). The blazon of Barcelona is " or in the four pals gules ".
In 1246, the last count of Barcelona, Raimond-Bérenger V, married his daughter Béatrice to the brother of Saint Louis, Charles 1-st of Anjou, with Provence in dowry. 1-st , new Charles count of Provence, brought with him his weapons : "azure sowed with flowers or lily ".
In 1382, her descendant, the queen Jeanne, having no heir, left with her death succession to Louis 1-st of Anjou, brother of the king of France Charles V. This last one brought its weapons in Provence, "azure in a flower or lily and in a leader a lambel gules ".
Provence recovered from this second house of Anjou until her transfer by the " Good King " René to his nephew, Charles du Maine, in 1480. In the death of this last one in 1481, the king Louis XI realized the definitive union of Provence in the Crown. The blazon of Provence is the one that carried Charles d' Anjou.
Links weaved by Frédéric Mistral and the first félibres with Catalonia in the last century preferred the weapons of Barcelona to those of Provence.
